How did you choose to become an astrologer, and what are the rewards and challenges?
It’s one of those things where it’s not really a choice but a vocation. I was drawn to it at a very early age. Astrology isn't the easiest vocation because people have all sorts of preconceptions, or misconceptions about what astrology is. Many people know a little bit about astrology, but it's really just the tip of the iceberg. It’s the most complex subject I’ve ever encountered!
In fact, that's the biggest challenge about being an astrologer - educating people on what astrology really is. It’s not a psychic, dark or scary thing. Astrology is a tool for understanding yourself and others. It's a mathematical system based upon the planets and their relationship to us - both on our birth date and everyday. For example, it’s been proven that the moon has gravity, which controls the tides. We are primarily water beings, and the moon is the planet that rules our feelings. So, beyond your Sun Sign, which everyone knows, there is a Moon Sign that represents your emotional side. You might be an action-oriented Aries, but if your moon is in Cancer, you won't be as fiery with your emotions as you would expect. In a nutshell, each planet has its own form of gravity, like the moon. That’s what gives them their influence over us on earth. Astrology is a guide to understanding how the influence of each planet manifests itself in our lives.
As for the positives of being an astrologer, I've found it to be an incredibly valuable tool for great insight - not only into understanding yourself, but understanding others. I remember the first day I took a formal lesson in astrology so clearly. The first thing that came out of the teacher's mouth was, “Be prepared for your life to change." And I thought, "What, that’s profound? What does he mean by that?" Now that I’m an astrologer, I know what he meant. Astrology enables you to understand what drives people and what their motivators are. It explains a lot of behavior. Everything sort of falls into place.
How do you know if an astrologer is credible or not?
Kelli Fox: Look for an accredited astrologer from an association. Avoid any that call themselves psychic astrologers or that have any ties to psychic hot lines. The psychic realm, unfortunately often grouped with astrology, is completely different from astrology. The first good step is to see if your astrologer can draw your chart by hand. Here are some links to Astrology Associations - American Federation of Astrologers (AFA) and the NCGR (National Council of Geocosmic Research).
What sign are you?
