The Astrology of Relationships

"Astrology" is defined in Webster's Collegiate Dictionary as "the divination of the (supposed) influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects." "Relationship" is defined as "a romantic or passionate attachment," "the state of being mutually or reciprocally interested, having close harmonic connection, or "having the same key signature." "The Astrology of Relationships" is a fascinating and complex branch of our cosmic art/science which attempts first to understand the nature of our individual "relationship blueprint," (natal chart), and then seeks to compare our unique "romantic signature" with that of another (synastry), in order to establish whether or not we indeed have a close harmonic connection. Simply put: do we get along? This article addresses our individual search for love, starting from within ourselves, rather than determining compatibility with an "other." By attaining a clear understanding of our own needs, and learning how to satisfy those needs ourselves, we have the best possible springboard from which to launch a healthy relationship with another individual. When we have unfulfilled needs, we tend to project them onto our partner and, when they are not forthcoming, the result is disappointment. Astrologically, when we think of relationship, we think of the planet Venus. A more balanced way is to look at the relationship between Sun and Moon, and between Venus and Mars in our natal chart. It is almost impossible to have a successful relationship with another human being without first bringing into balance the female/male dynamic within. Aspects between the Sun and Moon reveal our basic makeup, whereas Venus/Mars interaspects reveal our psychological makeup in relationships.
